Here is my take
The reason most of females prefer taller males today is because men make every woman taller than 5'5 masculine. It has been like this since forever. Please don't bring up models now I'm talking about average life. Personally I'm not that much tall but I've seen girls taller than 5'8 being treated like shit in school by boys and everywhere else in life.
So it's normal for women to automatically go for taller men, so they can feel feminine and desirable. That's at least the case in modern times.
If we look deep in history, like cavemen times, when it was all based just on instinct, It's probably because strongest males would be better at protecting his partner, offspring, is good at hunting and finding a peaceful place to "live". Since begging of times, males needed strength, and their biological purpose was to be strong and protective.
Which means..
Tall = large = strong
But we don't live in caveman times anymore. Neither of that really matters. If it does it's extremely modernised and nearly as close as it used to be.
So I think the first option is reason why it's like this in modern world.
My closest friend is dating man shorter than her and they're doing great, so I wouldn't say women hate short men. Women who feel feminine enough, aren't looking to come off as high social status to others simply don't care about your height.

It was a stagnant relationship. I would constantly try to come up with plans for our future, to move together, or discuss marriage and children, and he would agree with it then not follow through when I was working towards our goals. So empty promises. I even was in the process of getting him a job at my dads company, be he fell short on that too and also let down my father.
