There's a lot of depth in terms of ship designs and fleet composition (but the auto fit does work pretty well for most circumstances, and the game is pretty balanced so while making really powerful fleets takes a ton of work, making a good enough fleet to enjoy the game isn't hard at all, you can pretty much slap anything in there) but other than that it's actually pretty simple and easy.
