I finally signed up for discord and want to learn how to use it to make friends, but I don't really know what to do.

google says to just join discord servers, but is that really what you're suppose to do? isn't it preferred to be invited to them?

i've found discord servers, but i'm scared to join because it feels like walking into a party that i wasn't invited to lol

if i do join a discord server i found, what will happen? will everyone be notified that i joined? am i forced to talk and explain myself, or can i just watch others chat?

can you explain what it means to add someone on discord...? is it like facebook where you're adding someone as friends? what exactly does it mean?

If it's a private server, they can prevent you from joining. If you are able to join at all, it's probably a pretty big server with a ton of people or you're on a website like disboard where it might be a niche server but the owner specifically put it up there to get more people. So basically, if you can join you are already invited.

Usually people welcome new members. A lot of times people go through great effort to get new members. Trust me, they'll welcome you if you join and it's also not that serious.

In most servers there's notifications that people join. In servers with less than around 50 people, they'll probably greet you and might even kick you if you don't talk after a little while. In servers with more people usually lots of people are joining all the time and they'll not even notice that you joined.

not that person, but in my experience most people that drop their tags are serial ghosters, because that's the very reason they don't get any meaningful friendships to begin with
remember to look up for the person's tag on the archives beforehand, it might save you a lot of time and trouble talking to ghosters, fetishists or mean people in general

Yeah, I mean I never ghost people. I admit there's a lot of ghosting on Anon Babble but Chickn is a whole other level. There's a reason they have such a bad reputation.

yeah! I found this website on google and have been browsing discords there. but i start freaking out anytime i do find one i like, i get nervous and can't join for some reason. But you're saying that the owners of the server specifically put the discord servers on this website? Those discord servers aren't coming from an automatic list created somewhere?

Correct, they have to set up the post manually. The only ones that aren't manual are the ones you search via the discord application itself

Yeah, it depends on the server but most of the servers I'm in I have been in for years and never talked in them. Worst I've ever had happen is someone kicks me for "inactivity" but that's usually done to like hundreds of people at once with either the "prune" option or a bot. No one will notice if you just lurk in most servers.

I think you'll find only around 20-30% of most servers is active. If you just want to lurk I would suggest joining servers with members in the 400-1000 range, where you'll probably not really be noticed but they'll still be fairly small.

Overall feel free to join lots of servers or whatever. It's easy to just leave them. I've probably joined thousands of servers before. Also I would recommend not complying with any servers that ask you to verify your ID, and also avoid servers with anything too legally sketchy as they'll get your account banned.
