I think even things like wanting to protect loved ones is a complex drive other than survival or procreation. And thoughout history people have done things for greater reasons than just sex or survival. People have fought tooth and nail for ideologies and honor and have gone above and beyond just for the sake of achievement and advenure, irrelevant of any recognition they seek from peers
